EL GRILLO (Wreck)
El Grillo (wreck)
Dive The North would be happy to take you wreck diving!
On Feb. 10th 1944, the British oil tanker El Grillo was so badly damaged by German war planes that the captain decided to sink the tanker completely. The captain´s decision was based on fears of the damaged ship being an easy target for another attack, thereby further exposing the fjord and other ships anchored there.
Located on the east coast of Iceland, by the the town of Seyðisfjörður, the wreck lies at a maximum depth of 45 meters and 27 meters at its shallowest. The picturesque village of Seyðisfjörður is characterised by turn of the century Norwegian timber houses and steep snowy mountains that rise from the shores of the fjord.
