Dive the Arctic Circle

Location : Grimsey, North Iceland

An exciting 2 days of adventure sailing on either the Haukur or the Hildur, Iceland’s only schooners, offering you a close encounter with nature, interesting historic sites, magnificent midnight sun, sail training, whale & bird watching & much more. Birds and whales will accompany us to the diving spots.

Scuba diving at the isolated island of Grimsey is unique experience. The sea water comes straight from the North Pole and affords excellent visibility. On this trip, both guides from DTN will be on board to take you to this magical and isolated island that sits right on the Artic Circle.

This is a totally new challenge offered by Dive The North, in cooperation with Northsailing and we are looking forward to offering this trip which will undoubtedly be the highlight of your holiday in Iceland.

Availability : every Wednesday from 15th June to 17th August 2011 ( dive groups, contact dtn if trip is scheduled before or after these dates )

Minimum participants of scubadivers : 1 person. ( Note: The trip can be cancelled by Northsailing because of too low number of passengers or less than 4, bad weather condition or other factors. )

Diving skills : advanced scuba diving skills with experience in dry suit diving and boat diving*

Hildur was built in Akureyri in 1974 by two shipwrights, Gunnlaugur and Trausti. Trausti and sons would later become good friends with North Sailing and help the company convert most of it's boats into passenger vessels. North Sailing owners got to know their special skills and enthusiasm for wooden boats and set a goal to later behold one of the three big wooden boats built in their shipbuilding station. It was then in the summer of 2009 that Hildur sailed into Husavik Harbour but only for a rather short visit in the local shipyard for overhaul before a 10 day journey to Denmark where she would be converted into a two masted schooner with 250 sqm of sails in the shipyard of Christian Jonsson in Egernsund.

Haukur was built in Reykjavík in 1973, thus being a youngster for a wooden boat. In the beginning she was designed as a fishing boat but due to the shipbuilder's respect and enthusiasm for old sail boats the hull shape was rather unusual and in fact with a resemblance to the old shark and fishing schooners that were common around Iceland in the 19th century. When North Sailing bought the boat in 1996 it was soon clear that the boat would be a great sailing vessel and after serving 5 summers as an ordinary whale watching vessel the boat was transformed to a two mast schooner in the shipyard of Húsavík.

Note:

In order to get the most out of your scuba diving experience in Iceland we recommend that all participants come well prepared. Having a good hearty breakfast the morning of your scuba dive will give you the energy you need for the dive. Also, if you have only used a wetsuit we recommend that you acclimatize yourself with dry suit diving first! If you have not had previous dry suit experience we offer the possibility of dry suit testing before you dive. * for a small fee
