LARGER GEOTHERMAL CHIMNEYS

Strýtan

Location : Eyafjörður, Akureyri

Declared as one of the 5 most spectacular Scuba dive sites in the world, Strýtan is a giant geothermal smectite cone rising 55 meters from the sea floor. Discovered in 1997, it is the only known geothermal cone accessible to recreational Scuba divers in the world, rising to 15 meters under the surface.  There are several chimneys of varying sizes and all are within diving range. Out of the cone runs very hot, fresh water full of minerals. When the water from the cone comes into contact with the cold sea water, it cools down and slowly builds up the staglamite. We also offer tour to the Smaller chimney and combined tour.

Note:

In order to get the most out of your scuba diving experience in Iceland we recommend that all participants come well prepared.  Having a good hearty breakfast the morning of your scuba dive will give you the energy you need for the dive.  Also, if you have only used a wetsuit we recommend that you acclimatize yourself with dry suit diving first!  If you have not had previous dry suit experience we offer the possibility of dry suit testing before you dive. * for a small fee
